Chelsea Lake Roberts

Writing. Collage. Brand.

Artist Statement

Chelsea Roberts is a Michigan artist whose handmade, abstract collages and found poetry explore the construction of meaning in an image-saturated world.

Through mining ephemera like old journalism, print ads, found or kept letters, discarded job applications, expired polaroid film, and many other things that most people would put in the trash, her sourcing process is inspired by the Found Art movement. But she sees these materials as gifts, rather than discoveries.

Chelsea originally trained to become a theatre historian, earning her MA and publishing original research before deciding to leave academia for a job in sales and marketing. She currently works as the Director of Brand & Design for a leading Michigan public affairs firm.

While Chelsea’s earlier artistic work explored consumerism and satire through juxtaposition, her current practice is focused on abstraction, Buddhist ideology and creating larger scale works.
